Fortunate Finds: 1947 Glide-Tex Pressing Cloth Brochure

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I found an unused vintage pressing cloth from 1947 at an estate sale:

I thought that you would like to see the totally cute "How to Press with Glide-Tex" instruction booklet included with the cloth.  Page three includes good basic instructions about how to press-as-you-go for home sewers and dressmakers.

Of course, I still couldn't bring myself to break out my iron and try the actual cloth out considering that it is probably 65 years old and chemically processed in some mysterious way.

The last page is basically an ad for other sewing and pressing-related products that the David Traum Company made.

Enjoy!

  3. You were lucky in this find. When I have something that I need a cloth far, I use a thin, damp cloth. Works great.

  4. That is so fun to have the retro instructions! They certainly speak of the times! I try to avoid anything that needs to be ironed. What a luxury that we no longer have to press EVERYTHING! Happy VTT!

  6. I don't remember that BRAND of pressing cloth, but I do remember pressing cloths! My mother used them all the time to keep certain fabrics from getting shiny when pressed.

I don't keep clothes that have to be pressed - - - if they can't come out of the drier in wrinkleless condition, they go away. ;-)

  8. What an awesome vintage sewing find! It looks like the instructions have held up really well - the colours are crisp and the illustrations couldn't get any more charming.

Wishing you a beautiful day, dear gal!

  11. This is so interesting. It sure brings back memories of when I was a little girl. I remember standing at the ironing board with a damp cloth over items. I try to avoid things that need to be ironed but sometimes a person just has to get the iron out.
Thanks for the post. Have a great day.

  12. I was just trying to figure out how old my Glide-Tex Pressing Cloth is and I came across your photo under images. From the yellow packaging, it appears to be from the 1950s, price had gone up to 79¢. That sounds about right. I'm still using it, no problem.
